For the first time it was decided to open No. 38 to the public on September 21 as part of Culture Night. The building was open from 5.30pm until 10.00pm and visitors were shown around the Conference Room and Board Room by members of staff, together with a volunteer from the Building Surveying Professional Group. Society President Roland O’Connell was also in attendance. The evening started off with a trickle of people and built to a steady stream, culminating in a queue outside the door at the scheduled closing time. Latecomers had been told about the wonderful ceilings in No. 38 by people they encountered in some of the other buildings on Merrion Square. The universal comment was that our rooms were beautiful and in exceptional condition. We estimate that approximately 400 people passed through the building, many of whom work in the area and said that they walk past our building every day and longed to have a look inside. It is intended to open No 38 again for Culture Night in 2013, and to provide visitors with a booklet outlining the history of the building.
