Joseph C. Hogan (Joe) was educated at Clongowes Wood College and DIT Bolton Street. He commenced working for the firm CJ Dunlop before moving to Hobson & Robinson and then Beckett and Metcalfe. He subsequently joined the quantity surveying department of Dublin Corporation. He left there in 1965 and set up in private practice in 1966. He was initially a member of the Institute of Quantity Surveyors and served as its Irish Branch Chairman. He joined the RICS in 1966 and was also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). Joe played water polo for Ireland and went on to captain the team. He was elected multiple times as a councillor to Dún Laoghaire Borough Council and Dublin City Council. He was elected twice as Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Borough Council. He served on many boards, including Dublin Tourism and Opera Ireland. He was joined in the business by his sons Dermot and Conor and it became Joseph C. Hogan and Sons in 1988. Joe’s granddaughter Anna became a third-generation quantity surveyor and recently joined the firm. He adjusted to the various changes in the profession and became proficient in using Buildsoft and Excel. His last project before retiring at the age of 86 was the extension to Gonzaga College. He maintained an interest in work right up until his sad passing aged 93.
