October 2013 is a month that Ray O’Connor, President and CEO of Topcon Positioning Systems, will never forget. Having been elected an Honorary Member of the Society in May 2013, he received his Honorary Membership Certificate during the Annual Conference on October 24. Ray also made a presentation to the Conference delegates on ‘Innovation and Growth for the Global Surveying Profession’. During the same week he presented state-of-the-art survey and medical instruments to equip two laboratories at his alma mater, the Dublin Institute of Technology. He said: “Receiving the honorary Society membership is a highlight of my career. To be recognised by this important group representing the surveyors of my home country is a very personal affirmation that the career path I followed after graduating from DIT was the right decision. I want to thank the entire Society, with special thanks to Micheál O’Connor for the great hospitality and his dedication to both the Society and his profession.
“My brief time with you all re-invigorated my confidence in this wonderful and essential profession. In my travels, I rarely find such a vibrant organisation. My hat’s off to Ciara Murphy and Valerie Bourke for the great job in organising the conference, and their obvious dedication to the way the Society serves its members every day.
“As in my brief talk, I want to again emphasise the unique and powerful role that quantity surveying will play as a key driver in the adoption of BIM practices and the future of construction in Ireland. It’s a great time to be a member of the Society!”
